The Importance of Being Earnest

Tuesday, 21st August 2018

Ernest is Jack. Ernest loves Gwendolen but she doesn't know he's Jack. Algernon is also Ernest but he loves Cecily. Both Cecily and Gwendolen are particularly fond of the name Ernest, which is good for Ernest but is problem for both Jack and Algernon. Then there's Gwendolen's mother and Algernon's aunt, Lady Bracknell. She disapproves. Of everything mostly...except cucumber sandwiches...

Oscar Wilde's 1895 comedy "The Importance of Being Earnest" performed by just 3 actors, is a "Trivial Comedy for Serious People". It was a fast-paced, one-act adaption which truly demonstrated, as Algernon/Ernest observes "the truth is rarely pure and never simple."

Charity Parachute Jump raises funds for St James' Church

Saturday, 2nd July 2011

Whilst out bird watching on a snowy day in December 2010, 76-year-old Dickie Dutton fell in love with St James' Church as soon as he saw it. He knew nothing of its history but sensed it was a very special place, and that he wanted to help it. On 2 July 2011 he did a tandem parachute jump to raise funds to help improve the interpretation of the church for visitors.

Mr Dutton raised over £6,000 in sponsorship and presented a cheque to the Friends of St James' Church.
